Responsibilities
Tasks
- Operate tractor-trailers safely under all weather and road conditions across Canada, including snow, ice, high winds, reduced visibility, and mountainous terrain, adjusting driving technique for both refrigerated and dry goods loads
- Transport temperature-sensitive produce, fruits, vegetables, and dry food products on long-haul routes, picking up and delivering to customer locations across provinces
- Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the tractor, trailer, and safety systems (brakes, tires, lights, coupling, air lines, doors, seals)
- Verify reefer unit operation before loading (temperature settings, fuel, alarms, airflow) and set/monitor trailer temperature per product requirements throughout the trip.
- Ensure the trailer is clean, dry, and suitable for food transport prior to loading, preventing contamination.
- Supervise or assist with loading/unloading, ensuring cargo is properly distributed and secured and airflow is maintained for temperature-controlled goods
- Exercise added caution on mountainous routes with dry goods loads, accounting for load shift, grade, and braking distance
- Monitor cold chain integrity during transit, promptly reporting temperature fluctuations, alarms, or equipment issues
- Maintain trailer seal security and documentation to preserve shipment integrity
- Coordinate with dispatchers, shippers, and receivers on scheduling, delays, and delivery requirements, adhering closely to time-sensitive appointments
- Perform authorized minor roadside repairs/adjustments as needed
- Maintain accurate logbooks, inspection reports, mileage/fuel records, temperature logs, and delivery documentation
